History teachers tend to ramble off unrelatable facts about flappers, bootlegging, and the ease of life in the “Roaring 20s” during a typical U.S. History class, leaving their students with no real understanding of the subject. At the same time, English teachers’ enthusiasm over F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” can only be understood... Continue Reading

Besse stays hot with two more goals against Wayzata

February 6, 2012

Matt Muenzberg, Sports Editor

“We need our Kyle Rau,” said boys’ hockey head coach Mr. Ken Pauly, referencing the former Eden Prairie Eagle who not only led the team in scoring on their way to last year’s state championship, but also consistently showed up when his team needed a goal. BSM’s Kyle Rau is junior forward Grant Besse, who has been on a roll lately, averaging over 2.8 goals a game in his last seven games. He twice found the back of the net and added an assist in a 4-3 win over section rival Wayzata on Monday, Feb. 6. With section seeding on the line, there was a playoff-like atmosphere at the packed Plymouth Ice Center. “I loved it,” said Besse. “I thrive on that stuff.” Head-to-head match-ups... Continue Reading

SOPA bill is ineffective, inefficient, and infringing

February 1, 2012

Nick Hillson, Staff Writer

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is a bill running through Congress in an attempt to curb the illegal uploading and downloading of copyrighted information and programs. Unfortunately, due to extremely vague wording and unclear definitions, the censorship proposed could extend to websites such as Facebook, various e-mails, and any other free forum. Not only is SOPA ineffective for all but the technologically impaired, but it violates our rights and benefits only a small handful of elites. SOPA works by requiring websites and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to search through sent information and to censor any infringing material. Not only does this ignore the privacy guaranteed in the Constitution... Continue Reading

Girls’ golf team keeps getting better

May 2, 2008

While many students were enjoying a break from school on Monday, April 28, BSM varsity and junior varsity golfers Allison Thimjon, Janine Karas, Lindsay Mlazgar, Amanda Nagel, Libby Roberts, and Nicole Hillman set off with their clubs in hand to Bunker Hills Golf Course to play 18 holes in the mid-conference match.

Doing as best as they could in the wind and the cold, the BSM girls came in second with an overall score of 379, just four shots above rival team Irondale––their biggest competition this season. “We’ve had a solid season this year. We’ve gotten second place a lot, [but] we’re close to Irondale for first place,” said junior Allison Thimjon.

Though the mid-conference meet gave them an idea of their ranking, what really counts are the conference matches, starting with the one on Friday, May 2. To prepare, the girls have been working on their strokes and practicing with coach John Meyerhoff for about two hours every day. “We want to win conference. We’ve been conference champions every year,” said senior captain Janine Karas.

In fact, the girls have come up with strategies to lower their total shots and defeat rival Irondale. “We all owe the team something if we don’t shoot under a 43. We’re stepping up our game. Irondale should be an easy defeat,” said junior Nicole Hillman.

The conference meet is being hosted by St. Louis Park High School at Theodore Wirth Park. Their main goal is for each individual player to score under 45 shots to ensure a victory over Irondale. “

We need to all shoot about a 45 or lower, which is definitely possible because of all the talent that our team has this year,” said Janine Karas.

Ultimately, the team wants to win sections and make it to the state competition on June 3. However, if the team doesn’t make it, players can qualify to go to state and compete individually.

  1. Janine Karas Says:

I just wanted to say that the girls at mid conference were just varsity players and Danielle riley was a participant in Mid-Conference, I was not because I was not intown. Sorry if there was confusion in my interview…but I just wanted to make sure Danielle got credit for playing. Thanks!
