Fashion’s biggest night returns to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday of May, this year with the theme “Fashion is Art.” The Met Gala is the one event of the year that combines fashion, art, celebrity culture, and media into a single event. It is a fundraising event for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since 1948, the Met Gala has represented everything glamorous, A-list, and exclusive. It’s the event that everyone wants to go to if they have anything to do with fashion, culture, or art.
It is held every year on the first Monday of May, and it is run by Anna Wintour, the Global Editorial Director of Vogue and one of the biggest names in fashion. The event is extremely exclusive, and each guest is personally approved by Wintour. In 1948, when the event was first held, the ticket prices were $50. This year, the prices range anywhere from $100,000 to $350,000.
As the economic situation in the United States continues to decline, the Met Gala is an unnecessary show of wealth. The Met Gala is a good way to show appreciation for the arts, the combination of what fashion and art should look like. However, as the event progresses, many A-list celebrities take this time to show off their extreme wealth. As most Americans struggle, living paycheck to paycheck, this show of wealth is tone-deaf.
What was once a humble charity dinner became a night of indulgence and spectacle. Many people resent this, especially as of 2026, one of the honorary co-chairs of the event was revealed to be Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos. Jeff Bezos donated millions of dollars to the cause, and people have responded fiercely. As the founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos is known to leave workers in awful conditions that have them standing for 10+ hours in the workday, not able to take breaks, which people consider to be inhumane treatment
Many protest groups have responded by hosting their own “Met Gala,” which features protesters wearing over-the-top outfits while carrying signs that say “Tax the Rich!” and similar sentiments. Furthermore, bottles of what appeared to be urine were found around the Met. It’s a reference to the poor treatment of Amazon workers, as they aren’t allowed bathroom breaks and are forced to relieve themselves in empty bottles
The Met Gala is an adept way to showcase art and acquire funding for the museum; however, in the current economic crisis, the event exudes a detachment from reality. With famous people wearing outfits and jewelry that can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars, people see how the gap between the rich and the other people has significantly increased, causing greater concern.
