Senior Sunrise has been a longtime tradition for students at the beginning of their senior year. This year, a new tradition is starting – Senior Sunset. It will take place on Wednesday, May 27th, in the Benilde-St. Margaret’s baseball field. The event will include fun drinks and snacks for the students to enjoy and will last from 8:30 pm to 10 pm.
The idea came from BSM president Danielle Hermanny because she thought this event would be a good event to end the year. BSM Alumni Relations and Community Events Specialist, Catie Scherer Brackin, is also involved in the event and created a few flyers that will be sent to students to promote Senior Sunset. “[Mrs. Hermanny] thought that it would be a nice way to bookend the senior sunrise that is done at the beginning of the school year. Senior Sunset is kind of a farewell at the end of the year,” Brackin said.
As this will be one of the last events together as a grade, students are encouraged to attend and make the most of it. Brackin mentioned that coming together as a class can be a good way to remember all the fun times spent together throughout high school. She hopes the seniors make the most of their short time left together. “[I hope] our seniors leave the school on a really high note with a lot of fond memories, especially one final really fun class memory together just leaves them remembering all the great parts about BSM,” Brackin said.
Students are especially excited for this event compared to Senior Sunrise, as Senior Sunset will include Chick-fil-a, Dodo Pop, and s’mores. Students appreciate what was put into making this event special for the seniors. Senior Sierra Barrett is planning to attend the sunset and is excited for the event. “I like the idea of Chick-fil-A and Dodo Pop. I think those are really popular, and I think a lot of people will come,” Barrett said.
When students hear about Senior Sunset for the first time, they may think of Senior Sunrise, but this event is different because it will include more than just taking photos. Senior Jocelyn Hawkinson would love to attend the event if she can and likes what they have added to the event. “If it were [like] Senior Sunrise, it would just be pictures, but if people are getting food and having [other] ways to get together, that’d be a much better idea,” Hawkinson said.
Other than the senior party after graduation, this will be the last chance for seniors to spend time with their peers, some of whom they may never see again, and allowing seniors to have one last fun time with their classmates before the end of the year. “It’s your last chance on campus to hang out as a class; you can go support the lacrosse team before the event, or go to the senior showcase, and just have fun together,” Brackin said.
