The Alpine Ski Team’s season has officially wrapped up. Led by senior captains Gigi McMahon, Amelia Salmon, Rainer Gillis, Caroline Potter, and Matthew Clements, this team has celebrated all the wins, losses, and long, grueling practices that brought it to where it is now.
Alpine Skiing is unlike many other sports. A regular race is three hours and can be a long process. Alpine Skiing is more of an individual sport, as racers ski alone, but there is still an aspect of teamwork involved. At the beginning of the year, the team came together frequently, fostering strong bonds and a cohesive team. This has made the team much closer and helps upperclassmen connect with underclassmen. Alpine Skiing can also be a lot of pressure, as participants race one at a time. It can be a lot of pressure on one person with everyone watching. “Right before I go up, I tend to get a bit stressed out. But right before, I take a deep breath, and then have fun,” senior captain Amelia Salmon said.
The team’s goal this year was simply to grow and get closer. This season wasn’t about winning a special trophy or medal; it was about continuous improvement. This team’s resilience and dedication this season are truly inspiring. Although this year wasn’t about winning the top trophy, two members still qualified for the 2026 State Alpine Skiing Championships. These two members have represented BSM in the state tournament and have had the opportunity to continue their season and further bond as a team. Even though state competitions didn’t turn out exactly as the Red Knights wanted, they still had a good time. “It ended up not exactly as I hoped, but I was proud to make it and put down two clean runs,” senior captain Rainer Gillis said.
Overall, the Alpine Ski Team had a successful season with numerous wins. Team members have endured challenges, cold weather, and tough practices. However, they have learned lifelong lessons, formed unbreakable bonds, and made unforgettable memories that will endure. These are the factors that make a ski season feel so special. This team has truly put in the work this season, and as they reflect on it, the senior captains are proud.
