Scream 7 tries to bring the franchise back to its original roots, returning Sydney Prescott, but it feels more like a replay than a new story. Although they tried to introduce a new storyline with Sydney being married and having a teenage daughter, it still feels like a mix of old ideas rather than a new direction. Overall, it is a decent movie, but it definitely didn’t live up to my expectations.
One of the best parts of the movie was definitely the acting. Neve Campbell, who plays Sydney Prescott, does a great job of portraying her as an older, wiser version of herself. She does an amazing job showing the trauma that Sydney still carries and is now projecting on her daughter Tatum. The rest of the cast did great as well, but nobody stood out as much as she did.
The biggest problem with Scream 7 is the storyline. The Scream movies are known for their twists and making fun of other horror movies, but this one doesn’t fit that theme as well. Some parts of the plot are too easy to guess, and the mystery of Ghostface’s identity wasn’t as mysterious and exciting as in previous movies. When the killer is revealed, it doesn’t have the same shocking surprise; if anything, it feels more confusing than surprising.
Another flaw about this movie is that it depends on the older movies so much. There are a lot of references and callbacks that old fans will recognize, which is cool, but it also kind of makes the movie feel repetitive. Instead of having new elements or taking risks, it sticks to what worked in other Scream movies.
With all of that being said, the movie still had some awesome horror moments. There are a few scenes that are actually super suspenseful, and a few kills that are creative but not over-the-top or exaggerated, like in the other movies. It can be frustrating for audiences because they often have expectations that the next movies in a series will be better and more creative than the past ones. However, if you like horror movies, you’ll still find parts of it entertaining
Overall, Scream 7 is an okay movie. It’s not terrible, but it’s not amazing either. If you’re already a fan of the Scream series, you would probably enjoy it, especially because Sydney is back. But if you’re looking for something new and different, this movie might feel a little disappointing.
