Every year, there seems to be a new trend that takes over the hallways and social media feeds. Whether it’s clothing, accessories, or everyday products, certain items suddenly become must-haves. Water bottles, in particular, seem to cycle through popularity faster than most trends. In past years, it’s been Hydroflasks and Stanleys, but this year, a new water bottle arose: the HydroJug.
The new tumbler is appearing on desks and in backpacks, known for its large size, minimal spill design, and wide variety of colors. The HydroJug has quickly become a noticeable staple among students. Its popularity has grown rapidly, and its appeal goes beyond just drinking water. “I think it’s kind of just like a trend, because I’ll look around my class and there’s a bunch of the same colors… there’s like six of them,” sophomore Clare Hamill said.
Part of the HydroJug’s rise in popularity comes from its functionality. Many versions are designed with a secure lid and straw system that help prevent spills, which is an important feature for students moving quickly between classes. The large capacity also means fewer trips to refill during the day, which is especially convenient during long practices and busy days.
Compared to smaller bottles, the HydroJug markets itself as durable and efficient, mixing convenience with aesthetic appeal. Its sleek look and range of neutral and bright colors allow people to color coordinate with friends, outfits, or school colors. For many, it feels like a mix between practicality and a trend to follow along with. As trends continue to evolve, students say the HydroJug stands out for specific reasons that make it different from past favorites. “I think people like it because it doesn’t spill, like the Stanley used to be super popular, but it just spilled everywhere,” sophomore Sienna Cohen said.
Like many trends before it, HydroJug’s popularity raises questions about why certain products catch on so quickly. Regardless of the reason, the HydroJug has firmly established itself as this year’s “it” water bottle. Whether it remains popular next year or is replaced by another brand, the HydroJug has definitely left its mark in classrooms. Social media often makes these trends grow faster, as influencers show off new colors and accessories that make others want to buy them, to keep up with trends, while others simply like the HydroJugs’ simplicity and design. “I think it’s just like consumerism, and just everyone wants one, because everybody else has one,” Hamill said.
