As seniors start their final semester of high school, thoughts about college start to increase. Whether it’s college decisions or finding a roommate, seniors have lots to think about, but many are very excited.
One significant thing about starting college is how different it is from high school. Both social life and academics are very important parts of college and can vary a lot from the high school experience. Many seniors tend to want more freedom, and that’s why they are looking forward to the flexibility of everything in college. But with freedom comes maturity, and that might be one of the hardest things in the transition from high school to college. Senior Anna Kelm is going to the University of St. Thomas next year and feels ready for the change. “I think the biggest difference is going to be having to be more mature because in high school everyone makes the choices for you, when you eat, when you do everything, but you’ll have to mature and figure out a schedule that works for you,” Kelm said.
Another thing that is exciting for seniors is the ability to meet so many more people. In high school, there are many new people at first, but then most only know the same people for the majority of the four years. In college, depending on what activities students decide to join, they can meet new people every day. Seniors are definitely looking forward to finding new friends. Seniors who are leaving the state will especially be affected by the social side of it. Senior Meredith Seeger is off to Elon University next year. “There’s obviously just so many more people. Probably Greek life. I’m excited to be in a sorority,” Seeger said.
One of the most exciting things about college that can be overlooked is just being able to study interesting subjects. There are so many different subjects students can study in college, and there aren’t many other times in life to have that opportunity. Being able to study something students could do for their lives is exciting for some. “Probably studying and just learning about what I want [and] taking classes I want to,” Seeger said.
Although there will be changes when students start college, there is so much to be excited about. Once they find out where they are going and all the logistics of starting college, all that is left to think about is the fun and exciting things they will be able to do in the next part of their lives.
