This year, the Benilde-St. Margaret’s Student Council thought it would be a fun idea to have a theme song as a morning bell. The main goal of voting on a theme song was to hype up students before the start of the school day.
The school voted on a Google Form for an ideal theme song to start the day. The options were upbeat songs such as “Unwritten” by Natashe Bengfield, “Love on Top” by Beyoncé, and “Love Somebody” by Morgan Wallen. Every day, the theme song plays for five minutes before school starts, alerting students to the five minutes until class begins.
The song that BSM voted on was the NFL theme song. I was shocked that students voted for this song, as it was my last choice. There were so many better song choices that could have prepared students mentally for the day ahead. If we had chosen a song that people of all genders could relate to, it would have been much more beneficial. The theme song is annoying and gets old after one listen, as it is just instrumental. I find it extremely repetitive, and hearing it at 7:55 A.M. can easily get on students’ nerves.
Even though I find the song irritating at times, it’s a good reminder that there are five minutes before class starts. Sometimes, before school starts, students get distracted talking to their friends or scrolling on their phones, so the bell nudges students to grab their supplies and get to class quickly. It gives students a sense of urgency to start their day.
We should keep the morning bell, but once a week, we send out a form for voting on a new song. This would help it be less repetitive and allow students to enjoy a song they actually like. If songs were switched weekly, it would also help students get more energized and hyped up for the rest of the day.
Overall, I like the idea of a morning bell, as it is creative and has never been implemented at BSM. However, the NFL Theme song was not a good choice as it is aggravating at times. We should frequently switch songs so everyone can get a chance to hear a song they enjoy. I love the concept of having a theme song, but there is some work to be done for everyone to enjoy it!
