The highly anticipated movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, Regretting You, debuted in theaters on October 24th, 2025. The film was directed by Josh Boone and featured a very talented cast, including upcoming stars Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames, as well as familiar faces such as Allison Williams and Dave Franco. Regretting You follows the strained relationship between daughter Clara Grant and mother Morgan Grant, as they learn how to navigate through a devastating accident, revealing family secrets and shocking betrayal unlike any other. Through this, Clara and Morgan learn resilience, trust, love, and most of all, the importance of rediscovering their relationship.
Without any previous knowledge of what this movie was about, I had a very open mind and was looking forward to watching some of the most well-known teenage actors of my generation on the big screen. I must say, at some points the plot got scattered and I didn’t know who was who and what was happening. With many flashbacks and a lack of some background information, the plot was hard to follow at times. With the film also being packed with shocking plot twists, I felt like I was watching a reality TV show. The plot eventually all clicked, making the movie much more fascinating, but if you want to see Regretting You, reading the book beforehand or reading a summary will make the movie less confusing at some points, unless you enjoy the thrill of the unknown.
What I found most disappointing was the lack of depth in Regretting You. The movie seemed to brush over the fact that Clara’s Dad and Aunt tragically died in a car accident whilst having an illicit affair, which even resulted in a baby, and skipped to the new and positive outcomes, such as new love. I enjoyed most of the corny and predictable relationship outcomes, but some of it was just too basic for me. With the incredible casting, I feel like these actors and actresses were held back by the basic love story script, and I feel like we could’ve been given more emotion and grief in general.
Although the movie is labeled as a romantic drama, there were definitely some humorous scenes despite the overall theme being grief and betrayal. Some light-hearted, comedic scenes left almost everyone in the theater smiling or laughing. My favorite example of this was the “prom-posal” scene, which was an adorable addition that really tied together Clara and her love interest Miller’s storyline.
Regretting You was definitely not the worst movie I have seen all year, but I wouldn’t place it as the best. The twists and turns of the plotline, revealing many family secrets, definitely were suspenseful and kept me on my toes, but the almost too predictable love stories shown throughout the movie seemed to cancel it out for me. If you’re in the mood to see a movie that experiences many feelings from happiness to grief, I would recommend Regretting You.
