In a new school, it’s easy to feel like an outsider. The halls are unfamiliar, the routines are different, and there are new faces all around. For many transfer students at BSM, that feeling is familiar, but it doesn’t last long. Thanks to welcoming teammates, supportive friends, and encouraging teachers, transfers are finding their place faster than they expected.
Adjusting to a new school comes with more than just meeting new people; it also means learning an entirely new environment. The shift can be overwhelming at first, especially when academic expectations vary from what transfer students are used to. There are many excitements with transferring, whether it’s for a fresh start or a better fit. “…[I]t was an adjustment. I was excited to meet new people,” junior transfer student Alivia Bell said.
Whether they arrive during the summer for sports camps or on the first day of school, transfers often face the same initial challenges: getting lost on campus, adjusting to new schedules, or navigating the social scene. Yet, what stands out most isn’t the struggle, it’s the support. From clubs to sports practices to finding a seat at lunch, new students discover small but meaningful ways to belong. “They really welcomed me, gave me somewhere to sit at lunch… I feel very connected to the community now,” Bell said.
Even the more awkward moments, like getting lost in the halls, quickly turn into shared stories and laughs. However, with every mistake came support from peers and staff, helping new students feel less alone. “[On] my first day, I went to the wrong room,” Bell said.
Many transfer students say that joining a team was the turning point. Sports and extracurricular activities not only provide structure and purpose, but also offer an instant connection with classmates. That early involvement helps break the ice and opens doors to friendships that extend beyond the gym or classroom. “I joined… dance team in the summer, and that …helped,” sophomore Kailey Kanive said.
What stands out most in all these stories is not how different transfer students felt at first, but how quickly that changed. Whether through friendships, kind classmates, or simply being noticed, transfer students are learning that it doesn’t take long to feel at home here at BSM. “I made a lot of friends, and everyone was super nice,” Kanive said.
Overall, BSM’s welcoming environment helps transfer students quickly feel included, supported, and confident as they start their new chapter as a Red Knight.
