For many girls at Benilde-St. Margaret’s, maintaining long, healthy hair is a priority that requires patience and consistency. From hair oils and hair masks to deep conditioning and heat protectants, students have personalized plans to keep their hair long and healthy. Whether they have been prioritizing hair care for years, or just recently started paying more attention to maintaining healthy hair, each student has their own hair routine.
Sophomore Josie Virnig takes great care of her hair. Her multi-step routine keeps her hair soft, silky, and super long. Before showering, she uses a laser comb and scalp scrubber. Then, she massages hair oil into her scalp for a few minutes. “When I’m showering, I use detoxing shampoo, purple shampoo, and regular shampoo. Then, I use a hair mask and conditioner. I mix them together and leave them in for seven minutes. I put hair oil in [my hair] before I go to bed and when I wake up,” Virnig said.
Junior Grace Soderling has spent years fine-tuning her hair routine after struggling to adjust to the changes in texture that started in middle school. After straightening her hair daily, she quickly realized the damage that her hair was going through, so she turned to a more soothing approach. “On Sundays, I oil my hair, and I also do a hair mask two or three times a week. Right now, my favorite shampoo and conditioner is ‘Redken All Soft’, which has helped the health of my hair. I think oiling your hair every night is important. I prefer blow drying my hair over letting it air dry if I’m not wearing it naturally,” Soderling said.
Finding the right products for different hair types is crucial to maintaining healthy, shiny hair. Many students incorporate different hair products into their routines, especially if they frequently get their hair colored or style it. Popular shampoo and conditioner brands among BSM students include Redken, Oribe, and Kerastase. Moroccan Oil, Gisou, and Olaplex are top choices for repairing damaged hair. Virnig shares her favorite brands and why they are essential to her routine. “I like Gisou’s hair oil because it makes my hair look silky. I also love their hair perfume. Olaplex is what I use for shampoo, and I use Moroccan oil for conditioner because it’s moisturizing,” Virnig said.
Blonde hair is a popular trend among many students at BSM. Many students embrace their natural brown hair, but others enhance their look with highlights or a balayage. For senior Alex Roseblade, keeping her blonde hair healthy has been a challenge, especially after years of highlights. She relies on the Oribe shampoo and conditioner, along with the Kerastase hair masks to repair the damage that the highlights did to her hair. Her journey is a reminder to all that with the right products, it is never too late to start a hair care journey. “I started getting highlights sophomore year and I have kept adding more, but I’ve learned to take better care of it,” Roseblade said.
