When the school year ends, many students have a large amount of time to fill up. One option, to fill the void, is taking on a summer job. As summer has come to an end, it’s time to recap the interesting occupations of BSM students.
After being convinced by their friends, Junior Al Brown decided to work as a lifeguard at Golden Valley Country Club. They thought it was a good experience and valued the First-Aid training they received. “Now if an emergency were to happen, I feel like I’m more knowledgeable now and more experienced in knowing what to do,” Brown said.
Summer jobs don’t just come with new knowledge, but also with new friends. Just a couple new people can completely change the game, and can dictate the experience. “In the last couple weeks, I met some new co-workers that I just hadn’t been on shift with before, and I had a blast,” Brown said.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Cape spent her summer working as a waitress at Amira Choice in Plymouth, a Senior Living Home. Cape decided to work here since her great-grandmother lives in a senior living home and always praises the waitresses. She has accumulated many funny stories, from bingo night drama to burning her hands because someone wanted their cookie heated. She plans to continue working throughout the school year. “It’s really fun, as long as you can get the right hours off,” Cape said.
Senior Sofia Parish was a camp counselor this summer, a job she started two years ago after volunteering there and attending the camp as a kid. She loved the job since she is very fond of working with kids and wants to be a teacher. She became close friends with her co-workers and had a great summer working with them and the kids. Her co-workers were people she had never met, but they shared her interests, making for great friendships. “I just met them this year but we all just clicked,” Parish said.
Most students who worked this summer had prior experience with an occupation. Students tend to enjoy their chosen workplace, and working with friends. The most popular occupations among students this summer included serving at restaurants, camp counselors, and lifeguarding. It can be a bit of a time commitment, but most students believe it’s worth it. For those contemplating working next summer, it seems like a fun experience to do with your friends while earning a couple bucks. It can come with unexpected friendships with people you would have never met otherwise. “I would totally recommend it, it’s a great gig,” Parish said.
