Christmas Traditions within the BSM community

BSM puts Christmas trees up throughout the school as a tradition every year.

Travel

When Christmas break comes around people in the BSM community leave Minnesota to travel to other states. Some travel for vacation while others travel to visit family. While Majority of BSM students stay in the state of Minnesota for Christmas, some travel to other states. While some people go places warm, other people go places cold. Bowen Grieger celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve because his family leaves for Montana every year to go skiing. “I look forward to going to Big Sky in Montana to go skiing with my family,” Grieger said.

Outdoor Traditions

During Christmas time, many people in the BSM community do outdoor activities and traditions. One very common Minnesota tradition people do is go skating on ponds and lakes in MN. Adam Marshall plays pond hockey with his family every year during Christmas time. “There is nothing better than playing pond hockey with my family during Christmas time,” Marshall said.

Another outdoor tradition some people participate in is going on runs on Christmas Day. Running on Christmas Day can put you in a good mood for the rest of the day. Collin Keegan participates in a tradition of going on a run every year on Christmas Day. “Every year we do a mile run in my neighborhood with my neighbors,” Keegan said.

Indoor Traditions

Around Christmas time, people in the BSM community also have Christmas traditions inside. Most families take time to decorate the Christmas tree, set out cookies and milk for Santa, bake cookies, decorate gingerbread houses and watch Christmas movies. Many students at BSM participate in the more well known Christmas traditions. Sam Pikul and his family decorate their Christmas tree together as a family. “Decorating a Christmas tree can get repetitive and boring, but I enjoy it,” Pikul said.

Some families have unique Christmas traditions inside that many other people don’t have. Ryan Sever and his family celebrate a Christmas tradition every year, where one of his siblings or himself dresses up as Santa. Sever has been Santa in the past and had some words to say about the Christmas tradition. “The tradition is fun, but I don’t enjoy being dressed up as Santa,” Sever said.
