Although they are 0-2, the team is optimistic about how they have played thus far.

The BSM boys’ basketball team traveled down Highway 100 South on Tuesday in a clash against Edina. The basketball team just came up short against Columbia Heights last Friday, thanks to a last second buzzer beater. The atmosphere at school was one of strictly business. Whether its hockey or basketball, a game against Edina has more energy and appeal to it because of the close proximity of the two schools.

At the start of the first half things weren’t going either teams way. Turnovers and missed shots were a constant. With about 3 minutes to go in the first half it was a 18-16 lead favoring Edina. The Red Knights finished out the half strong with a huge blocked shot by Gabe Alada that sparked a 10-3 run. “It was purely miraculous. It was like Michael Jordan himself threw on a BSM jersey and decided it was time to take flight,” senior superfan Dustin Dallman said. Plus, senior captain Riley Miller finished the half strong.Miller ended the game leading the team in scoring with a total of 21 points.

BSM closed out the first half winning 26-21. The Red Knights came out of half with the same intensity the played with in the first. However, the game seemed to change about 5 minutes into the half. Edina had a key player return from injury, and after a hitting a couple 3 pointers, they had taken the lead. Edina at one point in the second half was up by as much as 11 points, but that didn’t ruin the Rek Knights’ spirit.

Joe Dunn had two back to back scoring plays that got the BSM back within 5 points with 4 minutes to go in the game. Both teams ended up in foul trouble. The last 3 minutes of the game was filled with each team traveling to the free throw line just to be trading points, keeping Edina at a nice 8 point lead. The final score for the night was Edina 63, BSM 54.

Even though the team lost, senior captain Joe Dunn was optimistic after the game. “Even though we’re 0-2, the team has done some really good things so far. We’ve also played two highly ranked teams and had chances to win both games. The biggest thing we need to improve is our defense because if we improve,  we can play with any team,” Dunn said.
