Senior honored for her community service

Known her for caring nature and friendly manner, Nathalie Lawyer is clearly an outstanding student at BSM, but her talents have now been recognized on an even larger scale. Recognized by all of St. Louis Park for her caring personality, Lawyer was this year’s recipient of St. Louis Park’s Caring Youth Award.

Lawyer, a senior, was nominated by the teachers here at BSM along with junior high student Sophia Flumerfelt. “I had no idea what the award even was or that I was being considered for it. Ms. Lenhart-Murhpy told me a couple weeks ago that I had won, and it was a complete surprise!” said Lawyer.

After the faith department had gotten together to discuss possible candidates for the award, they all agreed upon Lawyer. “Nathalie was deserving not because of her involvement on the Guatemala mission trip or countless R.K.V.C. events and not so much for mentoring students and not so much for keeping an eye out for transfer students, but because she has a discerning spirit,” said religion teacher Mr. Zeckser.

On Tuesday, April 28, Lawyer and Flumerfelt were joined by their families, Dr. Tift, Ms. Lenhart-Murphy, and Mr. Zeckser. Also in attendance was junior Hunter Tomlinson, who was nominated by the kids from Perspectives, and senior Spencer Miller, who sang and played “Here Comes the Sun” on the piano for the guests.

Each recipient of the awards had submitted a quote which was read to introduce each individual. Lawyer chose a quote from Og Mandino: “I am here for a purpose, and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth, I will apply ALL my efforts to become the highest mountain of all, and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy.”

Mr. Zeckser shared some warm words on Lawyer’s behalf, explaining why she deserved such an honor. “She has a combination of being exceedingly selfless and mature,” said Mr. Zeckser. After each recipient had been awarded, the mayor of St. Louis Park spoke to the congregation.

The ceremony was considered a success and honorable event to be a part of for Lawyer. “I felt so honored to be recognized with so many talented, selfless individuals,” said Lawyer.
