MEA service trip allows students to experience college
October 10, 2008
Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF) is an organization offering BSM students the chance to travel across the Midwest and get active in service leadership over MEA weekend. Over 250 students from various schools are devoting their time toward this service opportunity.
During the trip, students will be able to visit Notre Dame and the University of Wisconsin-Madison while participating in service projects in four communities along the way. Starting in Minneapolis and continuing on to Madison, Wisconsin; South Bend, Indiana; and Joliet, Elgin, and Chicago, Illinois; students are able to offer their services to a nursing home, the environment, a food shelf, and a camp for kids with disabilities.
This year is the trip’s first trial run at Benilde-St. Margaret’s. This new opportunity for students to experience service leadership while visiting colleges has proven to be a successful new way for students to get involved. Ms. Lisa Lenhart-Murphy, the service coordinator for BSM, said, “I’ve had a lot of phone calls, emails from parents, and a lot of applications have been picked up.”
Hoping that this will become an annual trip offered at BSM, she explains that the unique quality of this trip is its convenience for students due to the price, time, and location. “It’s our desire to create a new opportunity and to create one that’s closer to home, create one that’s more affordable.”
