BSM’s track and field team is not letting the weather affect them this season; over 100 athletes and lots of returning upperclassmen have been hurdling and sprinting down the main hallway, in order to get in shape for the first track meet on Thursday, April 17.

The captains are planning on leading the way to victories during their upcoming meets. “Our captain Marie Muscala is running our 1-2 mile, [captain] Susan Kenzie is doing our pole vault, triple jump, and sprints, and [captain] Colleen Ruane is doing our 400 meter relays,” said girls’ head coach John Porisch.

The track and field team practices together with girls and boys, making the practices quite large and overwhelming, “This year I’m looking forward to piecing together 67 girls into a balanced team where each event has at least two quality competitors,” said John Porisch.

Within track and field comes many different events that each team member specializes in, with specific coaches. “We have many coaches this year to help keep all the athletes organized. We have seven total, three coaches on distance two on sprints, and two on field events,” said John Porisch.

There are also some improvements to this year’s team from last year. A leadership team has been added to the track and field program. It is a group of seven juniors and sophomores who assist the captains. “They help do attendance before practice and by working at the junior high meets at home,” said junior Mary Cashman.

This year’s captains also plan on taking strong leadership positions for such a large team and look forward to the outcome of the upcoming season. “I’m excited for all the underclassmen joining relays this year for team bonding, and for the True Team race,” said senior captain Colleen Ruane.

True Team is a specific race where you don’t place individually, but rather as a team, so they have to work together and win as a whole. “Practices are going to much stronger and efficient this year. We want to make sure everyone is working their hardest and working as a team,” said junior captain Joe Jetland.
