Medical Club gives students hands-on experience

Medical Club is one of the most popular clubs at BSM. It gives students a chance to experience medical situations and learn new information outside of their basic science classes. With hands-on dissections and monthly speakers, Medical Club is perfect for those interested in the medical field or just for those who enjoy learning about medicine.
Joining Medical Club requires no previous experience in medical classes at BSM, and is open to all students in the Senior High. Retaining membership in the club is fairly simple, as attendance requires a minimum of two events per year.
Rather than learning through notes and lectures, the club offers speakers and dissections throughout the year. These events provide a hands-on learning experience unlike any other.
The most frequent events are medical speakers. These speakers are usually doctors, nurses, or others who have experience in a medical profession. The events take place every few weeks and are usually held before or after school. Junior Kiara Herro, the commissioner of speakers, said the speakers are from a variety of different fields to help students gain the most medical knowledge possible. “The speakers talk about their schooling, how they decided their career, crazy stories, and the advantages and disadvantages to help students get a better idea of what they are interested in,” Herro said.
The people who come and speak about their professions and experiences have really inspired me to pursue this path.
The other events held are the dissections, which take place towards the end of the school year, are the most anticipated events of the club, and usually, end up being the most popular. In past years, students have had opportunities to dissect sharks, squids, and other animals. “It’s a really fun opportunity to put your medical knowledge to work, and also have a good time with friends also in the club,” junior Lillian Nesbitt, commissioner of dissections said.
Being in the club is the perfect opportunity for those interested in medicine to further their interest and have more chances to learn. Sophomore Melanie Chang would like to become a doctor, and joined Medical Club for that reason. “The people who come and speak about their professions and experiences have really inspired me to pursue this path,” Chang said.
Medical Club is one of the most popular clubs at BSM, and for a valid reason. It gives students new opportunities to learn about medicine in modern and innovative ways. Membership in the club is beneficial for both those interested in medicine or students who just want another activity. “Medical Club really shows science in fun ways,” Chang said.
