Ranked first in state, the girls varsity soccer team defeated the Totino-Grace Eagles on September 21, bringing them one game closer to surpassing last year’s unsuccessful trip to sections and making it to the state tournament.
With a record of 6-2 coming into the game, the Eagles were one of the toughest games for the girls. “It was one of the best games we were playing this year so we needed to go in focused and ready to play,” said senior attacker Jordyn Burns.
The girls won their game 3-0 with senior midfielder Kackie Dankbar drilling the ball into the net at the end of the game. “Beating Totino Grace, one of our arch rivals, made a big statement that BSM is skilled and has talent,” said Dankbar.
When last year’s varsity goalie, Maddie Jobe, left, this worried a lot of people, but Mikayla Coloumbe, the girls varsity goalie, silenced those worriers. “When I came in, I was so nervous, because I replaced Maddie Jobe, an amazing goalie,” said Coloumbe. “The defense is such a big help, my coach has been a great asset, and hopefully I can continue to improve throughout the season.”
With the Red Knight’s win, the girls soccer team has proven to be successful with Coloumbe in goal. “We have had a shutout in every game except for one,” said Coloumbe, “but in one game I let in two goals; that was the only time.”
Towards the end of the first half, sophomore midfielder Dana Buckhorn rushed in towards the Eagle’s goalkeeper to get the Red Knights on the board for the first goal of the night. “We all knew that this would be one of our harder games,” said Buckhorn, “so it was good to set the pace early.”
As the second half began, a corner kick by junior midfielder Aly Hoffman set up a shot that Burns put in the back of the net. “I got a cross from Hicky, and when I saw the net, I went for it,” said Burns.
The girls team have expressed their hopes of making it to the state tournament. “I hope we make it to the state tournament and come out on top in state,” Dankbar said. “However, we can’t underestimate any other team in the meantime.”
