Meet Me Next Christmas, starring Christina Milian, Devale Ellis, and Kofie Siriboe is the perfect cheesy rom-com for the holidays. The main characters, Layla and Teddy, are racing through New York City in hopes of finding sold-out Pentatonix tickets. Layla, a confident and motivated woman, is on the lookout for tickets to meet a man who caught her eye at the airport a year ago, James, and who made a commitment to meet her at the next Pentatonix Christmas Eve Concert. Teddy, a humorous concierge who is on the verge of losing his job, gets to show his boss what he can do when Layla hires him to help her look for tickets.
Predictively, Layla and Teddy begin falling for each other while searching for tickets, but Layla is conflicted since she was originally hoping to meet James at the concert. I think it is interesting to watch Layla’s feelings for Teddy grow as the plot develops, while she still hopes of meeting James. This is a typical dilemma in rom-coms, Layla is trying to figure out what her heart wants and pick between Teddy and James. It is intriguing to see how her priorities shift throughout the movie as she figures out who matters more to her.
Going into the movie, I thought it would be similar to every other rom-com, cheesy and predictable, but the lengths that Teddy and Layla went to find tickets surprised me. From chasing a scalper to preparing a lip-sync performance, I liked seeing how everything they did only brought them closer to each other. This definitely kept me hooked throughout the movie, and there was never a dull moment.
I liked how the movie not only included the love triangle between Teddy, Layla, and James, but also included the group Pentatonix following Teddy and Layla’s search on social media. This helped make the plot more interesting and was a surprising factor added to the movie. Although yes, the movie was still predictable, I do think it was more light-hearted and carefree. The focus was not to make a complex plot, so viewers could relax during the movie, with only minimal twists and turns.
The question of who Layla will choose lingers throughout the whole movie, but the answer becomes more clear as the movie progresses. Meet Me Next Christmas is a feel-good movie that will definitely help get viewers into the Christmas spirit, and is perfect for anyone who loves a funny, romantic movie.
