The greatly anticipated Advent season brings the BSM community to a time of preparation for Christmas. With excitement and anticipation in the air, BSM homerooms are proud to announce the 2024 door decorating contest is now underway.
For years, BSM homerooms have competed in class challenges and games in hopes of bonding with students, making memories, and encouraging them to participate within their community. One of these challenges involves decorating homeroom doors to be voted the most impressive door in the hallways. “[The contest] builds a sense of community for everybody, and it kind of increases the school spirit for everybody, and competitions are always fun,” sophomore Maizie Adams said.
Expect to see fierce competition throughout the BSM hallways within the next week. From the homerooms all the way in the north building to those down by the Haben, every homeroom is determined to bring home the victory. “I’ve never won [the door decorating contest], and it is one of the biggest regrets I have in my time at BSM. I’m trying to change that this year, we’re gonna really try to win,” math teacher John Groess said.
This year, the theme selected is “gingerbread.” Feedback from several different homerooms indicates that the math department has shown the most enthusiasm so far. Two homerooms in particular, room 113 led by Annie Smith, and 114 led by John Groess, have presented similar plans. Each plan to incorporate the themes of gingerbread into a village-themed display. “I think we’re planning on making a gingerbread village and or city, and then having each one of our homeroom members as gingerbread people with their faces on them going around,” Groess said.
This year’s door decorating contest is sure to be one for the books. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together for a fun and friendly competition. Not only does the contest continue to encourage participation and cooperation, but it also serves as an exciting way to kick off the Advent season. “I think a little friendly competitiveness is unifying sometimes, because you can just work with your entire homeroom as a team. It builds excitement, and everyone can collaborate on something fun and creative, like door decorating,” sophomore Emma Cella said.
In all, as the BSM community enters the Advent season, exciting activities are anticipated throughout the hallways. With competitiveness in the air, the door decorating contest provides a chance for the entire school to come together and celebrate the holiday spirit. “When you walk down the hallway, it makes you feel like you’re doing something with the whole school,” Smith said.
