National Honors Society is for all schools and academic achievements. It is recognized all throughout the United States and is a great achievement for all who are inducted into the program. At Benilde-St. Margaret’s, the four National Honors Societies you can be accepted into are the Science National Honors Society, Language National Honors Society, Math National Honors Society, and National Art Honors Society. All societies could potentially offer college scholarships to their members in good standing, and it is an overall great idea to join for all students. However, the National Art Honors Society is one that may not be as well known and is a society that BSM students should look into and consider joining.
Those wanting to join NAHS should expect many of the similar criteria to the other societies offered at BSM. “The National Art Honors Society is an honors society that is nationally recognized and is similar to the science and language arts, but it’s for students who excel or value art and who want to share it in a community,” current NAHS leader Kelli Rahn said.
The National Art Honors Society has a few requirements before you must apply. To join the society, you must have an interest in art, make it a priority, and show ability. You also must have a B- average or above in all classes, have a B average in art classes, and display two pieces of artwork that best reflect your ability and a few other requirements. The students that join have their many reasons for joining, whether it be their love for one art they take or multiple. “My grandpa was a photographer and so I wanted to kind of follow in his path. And he photographs wildlife and nature and it’s super cool,” sophomore Elle Porisch said.
National Art Honors Society can range from unique ceramic art all the way to amazing snaps of the camera. “I’m currently in AP 2D drawing and painting, but I’ve been in all drawing and painting classes, every ceramics class, every photography class and pretty much every class they have offered in the art department,” senior Sophia Parish said.
For around those 20 students in NAHS they all have their unique talents. “Art is something that is really important to me and it’s fun to get to hang out with other artists, especially because there aren’t many in high school. And also I get a rainbow cord at graduation which I am really excited about,” Parish said.
