Boys’ Hockey Start of the Season Recap
The BSM boys hockey team kicked off their season on the first of December, and have played six games so far. The team has high expectations, with lots of returning talent and years of varsity experience, the Red Knights should be in for a solid season.
In their first game of the year, the Red Knights traveled down to Hill-Murray, where they ended up winning in a thriller against a tough opponent. The game was close the entire game, and they won by a score of 5-3, scoring two goals in the final minute by sophomores Micheal Risteau and Drew Stewart to put the game away. Senior forward Mitchell Dokman thought the Red Knights showed their potential in the first game, “ I think our first game really showed what our team is capable of,” Dokman said.
Following their season opening win, they faced the number one ranked 1A school Hermantown, where they lost in another nail biter 6-5 in the final minutes of the game. The game again was close throughout, with both teams looking even. “ I thought we had a lot of opportunities to win the game throughout the third period that we could have taken advantage of to close out the game, we just need to get better at finishing games,” Dokman said.
The next day the Red Knights won in another close game 3-2 against Eden prairie. Following the win, they lost in a low scoring overtime 1-0 to Wayzata, where neither team could find the back of the net despite lots of good chances throughout the game to score a goal. After the overtime loss, the next game against Moorhead had the same result. They lost in overtime 3-2, making it the 4th game in a row decided by one goal. “We have been in a lot of really close games that could go either way, and I think we are close to putting everything together to go on a run,” Dokman said.
BSM sits at 2-4 right now after another loss to Cretin Derham-Hall on Thursday night. So far this season, sophomore Drew Stewart leads the team seven points and has three goals and four assists. Adam Marshall and Micheal Risteau have sixs points each, and fourteen players on the team have at least one. Their next game is Saturday at home versus Holy Family, where they look to points back in a winnable game. Over Christmas break, BSM has five games total to get the season back on the right track.
