After ten years of working and teaching at BSM, Ms. Sandra Barrry has left the quiet study room and meditation classes to pursue a career in teaching yoga and meditation full time at the Emily Program.

Barry spent her first five years at BSM in development working with alumni. For the last five years, she worked in the quiet study, where she helped guide students who need accommodations as well as coordinated makeup testing. Along with the quiet study, she was the substitute teacher coordinator and taught meditation wellness classes. “I did five years in development working with alumni which was fun, but I always had teacher envy. I was really excited to work with kids,” Barry said.

Barry has always had a passion for yoga and meditation. She is a certified yoga instructor and has been practicing yoga for 18 years. “I’ve been teaching yoga for four years. I do twice a week during the school year and I teach a lot in the summers,” Barry said.

Barry will now be bringing her expertise in yoga and meditation to the Emily Program, which is a center that helps people suffering from eating disorders. Her role at the Emily Program will differ from her past yoga instructing experiences of hot and athletic yoga. She led yoga for the BSM football team on game days and did yoga with the cross country and soccer teams. When she taught yoga to these teams, it was very focused on stretching. “It’s going to be a bit of a switch to teach at the Emily Program because it’s going to be more focused on how they feel in their bodies as opposed to getting a good workout in,” Barry said.

This opportunity at the Emily Program was not something she was looking for but instead was asked to do. After having her son graduate from BSM this past year, Barry has been praying about what she should do next, so when she was given this opportunity she decided to try it. As hard as it was for her to leave BSM, she is excited about her job at the Emily Program where she will use her passion for yoga and meditation to impact people’s lives. “I really hope in some tiny way I can help make somebody’s life better,” Barry said.
