The wrestling team recently started its season and is getting ready for their upcoming matches. The captains this year are senior Walker Mullin and sophomore George Wolfe.

Mullin talks about the team’s goals for this year and how they will achieve them.

The team’s plan for getting better includes having practice six times a week and watching matches. “[We are] building up the team, so they can be successful in the future,” Mullin said.

Although the number of players in wrestling has declined over in recent years, the influx of younger players joining the team this year will hopefully compensate for that loss. They have a lot of new players joining the team. “We have a lot of young kids joining the team this year. I’m the only senior or junior on the team. It’s a young team––mostly 8th, 9th or 10th graders. We’re trying to make them better wrestlers, so we can have success in the next couple years,” Mullin said.

“Matthew Redin is our freshman star. He got third in Greco state this year. He’s a great wrestler and he’s doing good. Luke Fredin is another one. He joined last year—great wrestler. He got 5th at sections last year. He came back and grinded every match. They’re both great wrestlers and work hard.” Mullin said.

With a current record of just two wins, the team is working on improving their stats, but the real goal is to have every individual do better for themselves. “We have a lot of kids who show up and want to get better. Even if we don’t have the best record, we are definitely working hard and getting better. It seems there is a good attitude in the room this year. Kids are having fun and definitely want to keep wrestling. The goal of getting kids better at wrestling is working out well,” Mullin said.

The wrestling team suffered losses this year when last year’s seniors graduated. Alex Fischer and Ikenna Ujuagu were a core part of the team.  “Last year we had a lot of seniors graduate including Alex Fischer and Ikenna Ujuagu who were both important members of the team,” Mullin said.

With a season that runs through early February, the wrestling team competes both home and away. The wrestling team is ready to achieve success this year and wants everyone to come support. “In a couple weeks, we have some home matches and it would be great to see some people watch and cheer on. Let’s get some wrestling fans,” Mullin said.
