The State swimmers and alternates lined up at the State Meet.

BSM’s boys’ swim team has had an explosive season full of rigorous training, record-setting and new talent, with students like Matthew McGonigle breaking school records and placing in state. The KE talked to Matthew McGonigle to hear what he had to say about the season. Matthew informed us of the methods used to bring the team to peak condition.

We lost tons of seniors last year including our star swimmer, Tyler Metz, and another key swimmer, Tommy McGinn; but made up for it with tons of new freshman and young talent such as Liam Noble, who was an incredible asset to our team this year. We had all our swimmers swim at varsity sections this year which was great,” junior Matthew McGonigle said.

Mostly everyone made it back to finals at sections which is a huge accomplishment for BSM. “At sections, I set the school record in the 500 taking 2nd place and tied for 3rd place in the 200 making state in both events,” McGonigle said.

The season started on November 27th and lasted for fourteen weeks until March 3rd. The team would practice for two hours every day of the week except Sunday. There were 13 available meets in the season including the Championship meets like State, Sections, Junior Varsity Sections and more. There were also eight conference dual meets, which the BSM boys tended to win with their smaller team.

Other accomplishments included Michael Hunter placing 5th in the 50 and 100 free, and Graham Noble, who snagged 3rd place in the 100 backstroke, allowing him to advance to State. “It wasn’t quite as fast as I was hoping to swim, especially with how I started the season, but I’m super happy with how the team performed and it was a great meet,” senior captain Michael Hunter.

The team competed in the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay and Matthew McGonigle, Graham and Liam Noble, and Michael Hunter, advanced to state.

State went well. I placed 8th out of 23 swimmers in an extremely tight 200 freestyle and placed 3rd out 22 swimmers in the 500. Graham noble placed 18th in the 100 back,” McGonigle said.
