Coach Joe Creer runs workouts for BSM sports’ teams
Mr. Joe Creer, also known as Coach “Dirty D,” runs training sessions after school with many of the sports teams at BSM, and the results are showing on the field.
With the spring sports’ season approaching, many teams are preparing and training hard. The ways teams prepare di ers from sport to sport, but many teams are utilizing the resource that is Mr. Joe Creer this offseason. Mr. Creer, also known as Coach Creer or Coach Dirty D, has been leading workouts for quite a while and his formulas have led to success for student athletes in their respective seasons.
Currently, Mr. Creer is working with both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams. In additions to workouts after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the teams meet at the Batting Cages of Minnesota on Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. “I feel productive when doing these workouts. After I finish the workout, I have the full day ahead of me and have already gotten stuff done,” junior Benji Barry said.
Mr. Creer has been working on his formula for success for quite some time. “Besides football, my first sport to conduct workouts for was girls’ hockey. Now I do both lacrosse teams, track, boys’ basketball, dance team, and volleyball,” Creer said.
Since Coach Creer has such a wide variety of teams, he tailors the workouts for each sport. “My main focus is core. All injuries and pains center in your core, especially back issues. We do all the basics for the first couple weeks, then we do specialized sports workouts. For example,in volleyball, we do arms and legs with a lot of single-leg or single-arm work,” Creer said.
These workouts are having positive impacts on the athletes who take part in them by providing good motivational environments. “I like how the weight increase is gradual, and every week you feel a little stronger. I also like the weight room atmosphere––everyone in there is working hard, which is motivating. Also, the music that plays in the weight room is really motivating and is usually rap/hip-hop so it pumps us up,” junior Jane Hoyt said.
Additionally, these workouts are known to be challenging. “These workouts are very hard, probably the hardest workouts I’ve ever done. It’s a brotherhood for all that go through them, and I think that this will pay off come the spring season,” Barry said.
Coach Creer really enjoys seeing his athletes and success during their seasons. “Most of the time my success at BSM comes from the kids. The kids are the ones who show it. All the kids that do the workouts admit the success they receive. From speed to strength, it shows in their confidence. Watching the kids grow and and their potential is my reward,” Creer said.
