“Assassin’s Creed” movie brings video games to the big screen

20th Century Fox

“Assassin’s Creed” was one of the most awaited movies in the gaming community. “Assassin’s Creed” is a video game that, after playing, makes one want to get up and do something good and fun. It isn’t very often that game companies turn their masterpieces into movies, but when they do, it ends up as a success. Assassin’s Creed continues this trend, telling a story that although different to the games is well worth a watch.

Starting back in 2007, the game “Assassin’s Creed” follows a man by the name of Desmond Miles, who is descendent of multiple assassins. He is used by the descendants of the ancient Templar community to get what they are looking for, the Piece of Eden. Throughout the story, the goal usually stays the same: get the apple of Eden and protect it for the Order of the Assassins. In the movie, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) is the modern day assassin. Callum is descendent of Aguilar de Nerha, who was believed to be the last Assassin to be in possession of the Apple of Eden.

Adding in Callum’s descendent as the last known possessor gives it more context as to why he was so important to their research. They put him through a machine called the Animus, where they can enter his mind and his history. The Animus is essentially a time machine, that has the ability to bring someone’s mind to that of their ancestors by using their DNA. The Animus can follow a subject’s bloodline, and project what they are seeing at a 360-degree angle, so not only he can see it, but everyone else in the room can. The machine is much different in the game, though. In the game, it is just a tube that Desmond lies in. In the movie, Callum gets moved around by a giant arm-like machine to fully mimic the motion and memories of his ancestors.

Although the movie seemed to have done well, some fans were disappointed that they started a whole new storyline, instead of using the previous ones that people knew. They could have added Desmond into the movie as a previous patient, or someone who has already been there, but they completely ignored the other history of the past games.

The ending to the movie was very well done, setting it up for a sequel. They give the viewer a reason to see the next movie in the series, which hopefully will be out sooner rather than later.
