Section 6AA is the toughest section in the state, sometimes dubbed the “mini state tournament.” The array of talent is obvious, as no team has gone to state two consecutive years since Edina from 1995-1999, even after section realignment in 2008.
The Benilde-St. Margaret’s Red Knights continued this pattern on Wednesday, February 27, with a loss to the Wayzata Trojans 5-2. Wayzata will be making its first trip to the state tournament in nine years.
Sophomore Chase Jungels scored both goals for BSM, but his effort wasn’t enough, with Wayzata scoring four straight goals to punch their ticket to the state tournament. The Red Knights’ top line was unable to score, despite numerous chances.
The big ice didn’t seem to benefit BSM, and Wayzata took advantage of their scoring chances, converting on five of 22 shots. The Red Knights couldn’t get past Dingmann, who made 28 saves Wednesday night.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s concluded their season with a total record of 22-6-0.
