As you enter the BSM hallways, there’s no doubt you will spot numerous lockers and walls decorated with posters containing information regarding upcoming events, important news, club meeting dates, dress-up days, or any of the latest and greatest. These posters convey visual and textual information quickly and attractively to a broad audience of students and staff. Posters are often placed in common area spaces as well as the hallways so students can be informed on upcoming news in fun and unique ways.
As many events are constantly going on within our school community, it can be hard for students to keep track of everything. A big portion of decorative posters inform students about dress-up days for special occasions such as homecoming week or catholic schools week. This year in particular, the Student Council and the new BSM spirit squad have made an emphasis on student involvement, and participation in dress-up days is a big portion of that. Students tend to be forgetful of said dress-up days, so these posters serve as helpful reminders. Posters tend to be extremely colorful and eye-catching with bold fonts and photos making them effective and engaging. In an environment that can oftentimes be chaotic, posters are helpful and also fun additions to our school, displaying a sense of community and school spirit to the student body in an effortless way. “I think the posters make awareness of activities that are happening around the school,” freshman Macee Jacobson said.
On the contrary, some students say they don’t even notice the posters since we are typically busy in our own conversations or on our phones while walking through the halls, causing these reminders to be overlooked. Posters can become outdated very quickly, causing them to have to be replaced frequently, which can be a hassle for administration and student leadership. Students think there are easier ways for information to be sent out. For example, email tends to be a much easier route and students are more likely to pay more attention to these. “I feel like other topics you can send out a mass email as an easier way to spread them,” junior Mykenah Anderson said.
Overall, a vast majority of students agree that the posters in the school are effective, while others think that there are more ways to make them more effective.
