A Knight to Remember?

While some of the new aspects of prom were successful, others should be changed.

Prom is a night people want to remember, so Benilde-St. Margaret’s is trying to make it memorable for their students. I planned a month before to ensure the best possible outcome for my last senior prom at Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

Students at Benilde-St. Margaret’s sometimes have more than 20+ people in their group for prom. I know that the tables get pretty filled up as we get closer to the date for prom and the scramble for extra seats starts happening. The prom was packed with people trying to get food and even get into the event. I think there should be a limit on the number of people going in a group so we don’t have people that go to Benilde-St. Margaret’s who miss out because of other people’s groups that include people from other schools.

This year the prom tables sold out after the first day and people tried their best to make everyone fit into the table. Some of my friends weren’t able to show up to prom because of how filled up the tables were on the first day. Each table holds ten people and with the amount of groups, they tend to fill up quickly. My table at prom was packed with people and half the table was students from different schools.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s should do a survey and have the whole school see who’s going to prom next year or not. Doing this survey will help us know how many people are going and make it a lot easier to book the right amount of tables and chairs. If you don’t book a spot or you’re late to the survey then you won’t be able to go.

In terms of transportation, Benilde-St. Margaret’s also supplied a bus to Nicollet Island Pavilion because the parking spaces are limited in downtown Minneapolis. This year they stepped up and supplied buses for people. Although few students took advantage of the bus service this year, it should continue because it can help the students who can’t afford parking or can’t drive.

The dance itself could have been better. The Nicollet Island Pavilion DJs played bad songs at the start of prom and then around when people were leaving the DJ started playing good songs that everyone knew. I think the DJ next year should play songs we all like instead of these weird songs no one knows. This year I felt like the music wasn’t getting people in that fun mood they should have with going to prom. I found it quite boring as well. I’m also not a fan of the policies surrounding prom. If people got too crazy on the dance floor someone would come in and take them out. With all these rules, it’s just not fun; this is the seniors’ last prom, so I believe this one should be the one that stands out the most. Additionally, you should be able to leave whenever you want and not have to wait until 9:30.

They should also change the food for next year because people who are gluten-free couldn’t eat the food prom had to offer. I feel prom should’ve been improved especially because of how much we paid for it. The administration should improve all these factors at prom to make it the best possible experience for juniors and seniors.
