Sleeping is a very significant part of the lives of high school students at Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Some people like to wake up as late as possible before school, while others prefer to wake up much earlier. Balancing the urge to stay up late on weeknights with the need to awaken bright and early for school can be very difficult. However, there are some students who are easily able to wake up early before school.
Senior Jo Lealos enjoys waking up earlier than most students. She normally wakes up at 5:25 am on weekdays in order to go to the gym and work out. Waking up before sunrise comes much easier for Lealos because she cherishes driving to the gym when it is dark outside. Her routine may shock some students who love waking up late, but to her it is normal. “I get up, go to the gym for an hour. I get ready at the gym, and then I leave to go to school around 7:15,” Lealos said.
Senior Sam Broglio wakes up much later than most students. Broglio enjoys the luxury of having BSM Hour first period, and this allows him to arrive at school around 9:20 am. Broglio utilizes this extra time to catch up on sleep. He often wakes up around 8:40 am on mornings when he has BSM Hour and then completes his usual morning routine. “I hop in the shower quickly, brush my teeth, grab something [to eat] before I get in my car, put on some nice Morgan Wallen, and get to school,” Broglio said.
As students can see, there is a division between people who prefer to wake up early in the morning and people who like sleeping in as late as possible. One would think that the person who wakes up later gets more hours of sleep each night, but this is not always the case. For example, Lealos makes sure to get to bed around 9:30 pm each night before school so that she can get about eight hours of sleep. However, Broglio tends to stay up much later which causes him to get less sleep. “I get a solid six and a half [hours of sleep],” Broglio said.
