It is not a surprise that the BSM girls basketball team has secured their spot in the State Class AAA Girls Basketball Tournament once again. With 3 state championship wins, including 2023, the team has historically been an exceptional program. But, this season, in particular, they have continued to impress throughout the season. With 26 wins under their belt, the team has built their confidence throughout the season and came prepared for the state tournament.
The team started the tournament with a bang in their first game, the quarterfinal against Roosevelt High School. The girls scored 75 points to Roosevelt’s 40, also scoring them a spot in the semifinal match against Stewartville High School. And, with a point differential of 31, the Red Knights earned themselves a spot in the MSHSL state championship at William’s Arena for the second year in a row.
Although they have had such a successful season so far, the team had to overcome challenges throughout the season. With junior Kendall McGee out the whole season due to injury and senior Olivia Olson’s hand injury mid-season, the team has had to persevere through tough games without two of their most impactful players on the court. However, the entire team stepped up to the plate and showcased the multitude of talent on the roster.
The girls have worked hard all season and proven their perseverance and dedication to the team. The team made a point to bring this same work ethic and heart to state thus far, and it has undoubtedly had an impact on their performance and success. But, one of the biggest assets that they have brought to the court is their confidence and familiarity with the high pressure of the state tournament. “We know we’ve already been here before, so we’re not really nervous. We know how it’s going to work,” freshman Sydney Friedly said.
However, with that confidence, the team also brings another mindset. “We don’t underestimate any team or anyone because there can also be some upsets. You never know,” Friedly said.
The team brought their confidence and work ethic to the court one last time for the 2023-2024 season at the state championship, dominating DeLaSalle and bringing another championship home to BSM.
