As the first semester comes to a close and finals week approaches, it’s time for me to choose between a handful of study spots. Whether it be a quiet environment, a cozy place at home, a fast-paced restaurant, or a local coffee shop, finding a productive workspace to study can make a difference.
Studying at Barnes and Noble is a must for students who appreciate a peaceful nook; the cozy booths, nurturing scenery, and availability of charging ports make this the top study spot on my list. When studying at Barnes and Noble, I recommend locating the corner booth, ordering your drink of choice in their store, and becoming productive like everyone in the store. However, if you are preparing for a cumulative exam and cramming in information from August to now, renting a private room may be the option for you. Barnes and Noble’s private workspaces allow you to stand, sit, or move around while using floor-to-ceiling whiteboards.
As we approach winter and the snow starts to fall, staying in the comfort and warmth of your home may call your name. If staying in place, avoid study habits in your bedroom, on the couch, by the television, or in the darkness of your basement; instead, find a well-lit, productive, and moderately cozy space. An organized desk, cushioned chair, and secluded space away from family and distractions will push you to stay focused and energized while reviewing this semester.
If you are headed to study directly from extracurricular activities or sporting events and need a boost of energy, studying at a fast-paced restaurant is a favorable option. Influenced by what pre-study fuel you may be craving, places like Crisp & Green and Sweet Green, known for their specialty salads and grain bowls, Nautical Bowls, offering a sweet and savory smoothie bowl, and Panera, home of hearty soups and sandwiches, offer well-balanced meals to improve your concentration. For first-semester finals, visit one of these restaurants, order whatever meal best fuels you, and choose an undisturbed table or chair.
Whether in desperate need of a coffee pick-me-up or searching for an old-fashioned ambiance, Smith Coffee, located in Eden Prairie, checks both of these boxes. The brick exterior and rustic, wood interior is the furthest thing from the average coffee shop like Starbucks or Caribou. This appealing atmosphere welcomes you for hours on end, ideal for finals preparation. Although known for its smooth coffee blend, Smith features specialty teas, tonics, hot chocolate, and a variety of fizzes, ideal for sipping while focused. Smith offers seating at their coffee counter, in the main “house,” and on their four-season porch, allowing you to move when in need of a brain break. Be sure to visit one of these places when preparing for finals to focus and fuel up.
