As the winter season is upon us, many cold outdoor activities are starting. Students at Benilde-St. Margaret’s enjoy this time of year to be outside, despite the cold conditions. The activities vary from person to person, but there is usually something for everyone to experience.
One of the most common and traditional activities to do outside during the wintertime is going sledding and playing in the snow. Although it may not be a common activity for high school students, a lot of people still enjoy it. “I like to go sledding on this hill by my house with my friends when it snows a lot,” freshman Aida Parker said.
A lot of sports take place during the winter season. Students who play winter sports for BSM still enjoy playing their sports for fun outside of the season. Junior Ella Pasqua plays on the Girls Varsity Hockey Team and likes playing hockey for fun during the winter as well. “I like to play pond hockey during the wintertime with my teammates and friends,” Pasqua said.
Along with hockey, another common activity during the winter is skiing and snowboarding. A common place to go after school is Hyland Hills. Although it’s not the biggest ski hill, students still enjoy going and hanging out with their friends. “I like to go skiing at Hylands and do the terrain park with my friends,” sophomore Patrick Mohabir said.
During the winter season, a lot of families have traditions they do every year. Sophomore Vivian Brandt’s family has a tradition of going skiing together every year since she was a kid. “I skied growing up, and it’s like a family tradition…We go on trips to ski sometimes and ski over the weekends,” Brandt said.
Winter and summer seasons both are season favorites for students at BSM. A lot of students enjoy the winter season because of Christmas and New Year’s and all the preparations that lead up to them. On the other hand, a lot of students prefer summer because of the warm weather and summer break. “I prefer summer rather than winter because I do a lot more in the summer like tanning and hanging out with friends, while in winter I’m limited to just skiing so I think summer is more fun for me,” Brandt said.
