On Tuesday, many BSM students took time out of their day to participate in the blood drive by donating to help the cause. Donating blood can have many benefits for others, though many find it scary at first. Some of the advantages of donating blood are that students can find out what blood type they have and allows students to give back to the community. Blood drives help people heal and recover from injuries or medical procedures, so students are doing their part to help.
Junior Griffin Stewart donated blood this year and believes donating blood is very important. He believes he can help people who need the blood, especially for other people like him with common blood types. Stewart knew he either had A positive or O negative blood type, but wanted to confirm by donating blood. He believes no matter what is happening in the world, it is important to donate blood because there is always a need for it. It is a relatively short process with lasting impacts, and Stewart says he would definitely donate blood again. “I have family [members] that are first responders and family [members] that are in the medical field and they have told me that if you can donate, you should,” Stewart said.
Sophomore Abigail Kagel donated blood for the first time this year. Like Stewart, Kagel wanted to donate blood to find out what her blood type is and because she believes it is going towards a good cause. This being her first time donating blood, she was a bit nervous. “[Students should remember] that it’s for a good cause,” Kagel said.
Senior Ava Black has donated blood in the past and donated again this year. She doesn’t mind skipping class for a short while to help others. Black appreciates the fact that BSM gives students the opportunity to donate blood because otherwise she most likely would not go out of her way to do so. She believes that helping others through donating blood is definitely worth the little pain that is involved in the process. “It makes you feel better knowing that you’re doing something for somebody else,” Black said.
Donating blood helps the community and can have advantages for the donor like being able to find out which blood type you are, since many people do not know. It’s not a very time-consuming act that can save someone’s life (and you get a cookie). “It’s a good thing to do,” Kagel said.
