Many students and teachers have noticed a new face at Mass. Benilde-St. Margaret’s welcomes new piano player, Laurie Youngers, to the Red Knight community for Mass. The music department has seen many new faces within the past years with the departures of Ryan Werdon, Paul Keefe, and Nancy Stockhaus. Youngers is a veteran in the music industry and is excited to take her 40 years of experience to BSM Masses.
Youngers attended Briar Cliff University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance and Conducting. After college, she continued to seek further knowledge of music by attending classes, workshops, and certifications in different aspects of musical ministry and theology. She has been a Director of Liturgy and Music for 27 years and is currently at Pax Christi Catholic Community.
Youngers is eager to work with youth from BSM to create magic through music during Mass. Her spirit resides in playing the piano and is able to play texts that speak of our journey. She is excited to be a part of our Masses because she grew up attending Catholic school and has worked at various Catholic schools since. She specifically enjoys being around youth because they are lively, curious and have energy that fills the spirits during Mass. “All of it reminds me of Pope Francis’ words that we need to fling the church doors open wide and see the saints walking among us,” Youngers said in an email interview.
Throughout the years, Mass has become a tradition at BSM. It brings a sense of togetherness and enhances the participation of adolescents to fully worship God. This year, BSM’s scripture theme resides from the book of Jeremiah and encourages us to seek God “with all your heart.” Youngers is eager to relay this message through her music. “I grew up Catholic, started singing at church at age five, playing for church at age 10, and went to school for music. I was destined to be in the Music Ministry,” Youngers said.
Although Youngers will only be at BSM for Masses, her experience, passion, and energy will be noticed throughout the BSM hallways. Her specific role at Mass will be to play songs on the Piano as solos, as well as the background BSM Choirs’ voices. She likes to experience meeting new people. “I see this as a way to invite and welcome and be in community with others,” Youngers said.
