Every day when students walk into school, they walk past the main office. Those who work inside of the main office help hold the day-to-day activities of BSM together. Many students walk past without thinking twice about the work that goes into working in the office.
When you walk into the school, you are welcomed by senior high receptionist, Kathleen Huyck. Her primary job is to answer the phone and welcome students and parents into the building. During the day, Huyck is busy answering phone calls from parents to release their kids. “During mornings and afternoons, it’s the most busy because a lot of parents call in those times to release their kids,” Huyck said.
As you walk towards the back of the school, you will pass the junior high office. Sarah Gerads is the junior high administrative assistant. Her main job is similar to Huyck’s job but focuses just on the junior high admission. “During the day I am still dealing with attendance issues from the morning, and I’m preparing for the next day. I also look to handle any situation staff members may need help with,” Gerads said.
Huyck and Gerads’ jobs are very similar, but they both enjoy different things about their jobs. Gerad’s favorite part of her job is being on the computer doing all the attendance and making all the fine adjustments. Huyck enjoys all the conversations that come along with her duties.“I love the interaction with the students and the parents and the families for the most part,” Huyck said.
As for working with others in the office, Huyck and Gerad are both pretty independent with their jobs in the office. Huyck and Kathleen Galper, an administrative assistant, help each other out as far as answering the phone, but they both still have their own responsibilities. Gerard works solo in the junior high office as far as attendance but still helps in areas that are needed. “I’m the only one that does attendance, but I help out wherever I’m needed. If there’s a water issue out in the hallway, try to clean it up or get hold of maintenance, or I step into a classroom just to watch while a teacher has to deal with an issue really quickly,” Gerad said.
