On Friday morning many seniors planned to get up extra early so they could get to BSM on time for the annual Senior Sunrise. So, when those students woke up to thunder, lightning, and pouring rain there was certainly some disappointment.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s Homecoming Week brings many fun activities for students to participate in but there are some events exclusive to seniors. One of those is the tradition of having the seniors go out to the turf to watch the sunrise as a class. The sunrise is an important event for the senior class to bond early on in the year, and it’s an added bonus that the parent association also offers donuts to students.
Canceling the sunrise was sad for many seniors because it has been a senior perk to look forward to throughout high school. Senior Regan Conaty was excited to take photos in her customized senior overalls, like so many others. “When they emailed us, at about 5:45 in the morning, I was almost ready to leave so I was upset because I woke up early for no reason,” Conaty said.
Although, other seniors weren’t too troubled about the sunrise being canceled. Senior Sabrina Bucaro expected the Sunrise to be canceled because of the constant rain throughout the week. “I was happy that it ended up being canceled because I didn’t want to have to take pictures in the rain,” Bucaro said.
A tradition for many of the senior girls is to customize their own BSM-themed overalls. For many years, the Senior Sunrise is when these overalls are debuted and photographed. With an already early wake-up to get to school before sunrise, many senior girls get up extra early so they can get ready and make sure their overalls look good. “I woke up at five am and I was ready to leave my house before six,” Conaty said.
As sad as it is that this special morning for seniors couldn’t happen, maybe it was meant to be. Senior Oliva Gorton had a crazy busy homecoming week already so the stress of getting up early to get to school in time for the sunrise was stressful. “I was planning on going but I was also dreading it because of how early it was,” Gorton said.
The seniors hope that because the Senior Sunrise is such a fun tradition administration will reschedule for another date when the weather will be better. Many seniors stated that if it were rescheduled they would definitely attend. “Yes, I’m going if it gets rescheduled, because I hope it’ll be on a nice day and I want cute pictures,” Gorton said.

Fingers crossed Senior Sunrise gets rescheduled. It would be very disappointing if this years senior class misses out on this tradition that they have all been looking forward to for so long.
