After postponing senior night twice, the BSM Girls’ Varsity hockey team was fortunate enough to celebrate the senior players during their first section game on March 16, 2021.

Since the season endured many setbacks and the majority of the team are seniors, providing a memorable senior night became a priority for the team. Senior parents responded quickly to the postponed games and put an immense amount of care and effort into the night. “Senior night was better than I was expecting. I went into it not really expecting much because everything that’s been going on with COVID. But the parents who put it all together did an amazing job despite the challenges,” senior assistant captain Maya Jones said.

This was the first time a senior night took place during a section game, which made the night even more special. Walking away with a 7-0 victory, the team was able to celebrate their success and the seniors hockey careers. After the game, each senior was introduced and given a speech by a teammate. “Senior night was bittersweet. It was super fun getting a win for our first section game. And afterwards, things got emotional because we have so many seniors on the team and the speeches were so meaningful,” senior Lucy Hanson said.

The speeches ended up sweetening the section victory and provided additional memories. Whether there were tears shed or laughter from the team during each speech, every senior was honored and celebrated. “The speeches truly made senior night special. It was very emotional for me, but they were all very funny, and endearing, and the perfect end to the night,” senior captain Anna Podein said.

Almost all of the seniors have been on the hockey team since freshman year, and winning the first section game on their senior night made it even more meaningful. The victory set the tone for the rest of the season and made the seniors determined to win their last season playing high school hockey. “My favorite part of senior night was starting off playoffs on a good note. Everyone on the roster got a chance to play and we put ourselves in a great position going into the rest of our playoff games. Our team has put in the work every time we come to the rink, and I can’t wait to see us finish the job,” Hanson said.
