Hockey teams fight cancer
February 1, 2018
The BSM Girls and Boys hockey teams are joining forces by raising money to fight cancer. The teams have paired up with the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund, and all the money raised on this night will be donated to the fund to help those dealing with the challenges that come along with fighting cancer. On February 1st, the girls team will be hosting Holy Angels at 5 pm, followed by the boys game against Minnetonka at 7 pm. Both games will be held at the St. Louis Park Rec. Center.
A few ways that money will be raised this night is through ticket sales to watch the game, chuck-a-puck, and BSM apparel will be available to purchase. “We are selling water bottles, hats, and pop-sockets in hopes of raising more money,” senior girls captain Aspen Konowalchuk said.
They will also be accepting donations from anyone who is willing or wanting to donate. Some fun activities such as raffle drawings for prizes and a t-shirt toss will also take place.
Both of the hockey teams are excited about this event and the girls teams even has special jerseys they will be wearing specifically for this night. These pink jerseys were designed by junior girls captain, Sally Calengor’s dad who organized this event.
On the back of each of jersey is a word that describes, or is inspired by, a cancer fighter/survivor. However, players also had the option to put the name of someone special in their lives who has been touched by cancer. “My grandfather passed away from cancer, so the back of my jersey says ‘papa’ on it,” Konowalchuk said.
If players chose to customize the jersey, they then were the ones to purchase the jersey, and that money was then put into the donations for the charity fund. The jerseys that were not customized will be auctioned off and that money will also be donated.
The BSM hockey players cannot wait to wear these jerseys and play for such an important and meaningful cause. “I am super excited to be able to participate in the Wash Out Cancer fundraiser and have the opportunity to represent my grandpa on my jersey,” senior Amanda Nylander said.
