Conference opener ends in disappointment for boys soccer
On Tuesday, September 3rd, the Benilde-St. Margaret’s boys soccer team took on the Irondale Knights at home. Coming off a big upset over class AA powerhouse Eden Prairie, confidence was with the Red Knights going into the game. But it was short-lived as conference opopenent Irondale topped Benilde-St. Margaret’s 1-0.
The game’s lone goal came off a penalty kick in the first half after a handball was called in the Red Knights’ box. Senior goalkeeper Andrew Birkeland made the initial save, but Irondale captain Gabe Montague scored on the following rebound.
The end result of the game disappointed the team, especially considering the way the game was played. “We controlled the whole game, but we just needed to finish our chances,” captain Taras Tataryn said.
