A stunned Red Knights team sulked into the locker room. They had just lost to section 6AA rival Wayzata 7-1 at home, and on top of being thoroughly outplayed, they were equally embarrassed. Now, as they would face off against the Trojans for the second time in just as many games, there was more on the line than just section seeding or getting the win. This time, it was about pride.
BSM got their revenge, winning the game 5-2 in front of a packed house at the SLP Rec Center on Jan. 3. After a scoreless first period, it looked like it was either team’s game to take control of, and the Red Knights did just that, scoring three second period goals, laying the foundation for the victory. Senior captain T.J. Moore scored the first goal of the game just 36 seconds into second period, giving BSM a 1-0 lead. Grant Besse added to that lead as he fired a rocket slap shot over the shoulder of Wayzata goaltender Vaughn Ahrens on a powerplay at 4:30 of the period, and junior Spencer Naas knocked in a rebound with 29 seconds left in the period, leaving BSM in control going into the third stanza of the game.
Besse scored an early goal in the third, extending the lead to four, but the Trojans bounced back with two goals in less than 20 seconds to cut the lead in half. The Red Knights would hold on for the victory.
