Last year, the Benilde-St. Margaret’s boys’ hockey team fell twice to the Maple Grove Crimson. On Monday, December 17, they avenged those two losses by defeating the Crimson 5-1, showcasing their powerful top line.
Spencer Naas scored the first goal of the game 4:24 into the first period when Grant Besse fed him a pass in the slot, which he tipped in past Crimson goaltender John Danielson. Besse added another to the total on a shorthanded goal 5 minutes later. Crimson forward Sam Valerius scored a powerplay goal with under a minute left in the first, cutting the lead to one.
From then on out, it was all about the Red Knights, as they added on three more goals. Naas scored a hattrick and Besse scored another, ending the night with two goals and two assists. He also broke the Benilde-St. Margaret’s school record for points, surpassing Christian Horn’s (‘12) record of 206. Senior Daniel Labosky had 4 assists, and he now leads the team in points with 15.
On Friday, the Red Knights will travel up to Duluth to play the Marshall Hilltoppers at Mars Lakeview Arena, then on Saturday, they will face off against the Hibbing/Chisholm Bluejackets at the Hibbing Memorial Ice Arena.
