Smile Network, a non-profit founded in Minnesota, became the first Common Basket recipient of the year at BSM’s Homecoming Liturgy, receiving over $3,300. The organization provides reconstructive surgery to children born with cleft palates and other disfigurations, all of whom can’t afford the surgery. Smile Network travels to impoverished countries like Peru and Kenya, where cultures traditionally shun children with abnormalities. Mrs. Jean Nightingale, Math Department chair, nominated the organization. “For such a little amount of money-$500 per surgery-we can make [a] child’s life wonderful as opposed to being shunned their whole life,” Nightingale said. Donations for Smile Network were collected during Homecoming Liturgy on Thursday, Sept. 29.

I am very proud of BSM’s students and staff for this wonderful example of going beyond our small world and living up to the message of the gospel, at least as I understand it.
Go Red Knights!
