In their homecoming football game on Friday, September 24 against the Fridley Tigers, the Red Knights defeated Fridley 24-10, ending their homecoming week with a celebratory win.
Senior captain running back Kyle McCarthy rushed for 222 yards, his career high with the Red Knights. As a result of this performance, he was named “Metro Athlete of the Week” by the Pioneer Press.
Senior captain Myles Barnes caught two touchdowns advancing the score to 18-6 with nine minutes left in the game. “The most memorable play of the night was Barnes’ one-handed catch for a touchdown,” said McCarthy.
The team, having lost their two previous games, felt the pressure to play well especially for all the fans—students and alums alike—in the stands. “We were disappointed in the last two games,” said captain Tommy Nelson.
The team pulled it together and gave the crowd an amusing game to watch. “With homecoming, along with the new stadium, the spirits of all of us players were a lot higher, and we wanted to perform well for the crowd,” said McCarthy.
The Benilde-St. Margaret’s Red Knights play again this Friday, October 1, against St. Louis Park at the Orioles’ home field. “Big rivalry for them, just another game for us,” said McCarthy.
