Penumbra Theatre’s Black Nativity–Hear Again the Christmas Story! returns for its twentieth run at the St. Paul theater, bringing unique holiday entertainment to the Twin Cities. The cozy theater is transformed into the home of Grandma Walker, a recent widow consumed with the death of her husband. It is the job of the Walker family to bring holiday cheer to her though song, dance, and family bonding when they visit to celebrate Christmas. The play, which has very little dialogue, consists mainly of the Walker family singing a variety of popular Christmas songs–26 in all–in gospel fashion, accompanied by peppy dance routines. With a cast full of seasoned actors and recording artists, Penumbra’s Black Nativity delivers a memorable holiday experience.
