Dave Matthews Band released “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King” on June 2 2009, after the passing of the saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who died in a tragic ATV accident in the summer of 2008.
This album contains various tracks that mirror their own personal sadness in the wake of LeRoi’s death. “Funny the Way it is” is a song that became DMB’s newest hit single and contains well-written metaphors.
Dave Matthew’s lyrics emphasize how life can be depressing from the cause of just one death. “Funny the Way it is” illuminates the highs and lows of life and how life can be remarkably different for any two people: “Funny the way it is, if you think about it, one kid walks ten miles to school, another’s dropping out.”
“Funny the Way it is” portrays the sense of DMB’s cloudy and mournful condition they were experiencing when the lyrics were written. Overall, the song ironically explains how for better or for worse, conflicts regularly happen in the world and despite our efforts to dissuade them from happening, it seems that there is little we can do.
