This school year, BSM has started a special tradition of recognizing sports teams via announcements. Before the last period of each day, our afternoon announcements feature students from our school’s student council recognizing sports teams and clubs and their achievements along with individual students who make an impact throughout the BSM community and are referred to as “outstanding Red Knights”. Featuring teams and students and their achievements gives our school a better sense of community and increases our pride and school spirit.
Students have lots of positive feedback regarding their sports or activities being discussed in the announcements. It informs the school about the success other students are facing, creating a better sense of belonging throughout. Sophomore Arwen Patell claims many positive aspects come along with recognizing successful groups around the BSM community. “I think it helps boost school spirit and appreciation for these other things to know they’re doing well. Because a lot of times, we don’t really know what’s happening with these teams, [and] we have to ask people… So it’s nice to actually gain knowledge about the things that we don’t know from normal life,” Patell said.
Freshman Macee Jacobson was one of the students recognized as an outstanding Red Knight. She was given a shout-out on the announcements for her dedication and the positive attitude that she brings to her sports team. She is on the dance team, and though she was happy to be given the shoutout, she still felt a little nervous because the entire high school heard the announcement. “It made me feel happy, but I was also kind of embarrassed,” Jacobson said.
Patell was also given an individual shoutout on the announcements for scoring in the top 40 for the math league. Along with her, some of her friends were also featured, and it made her happy to know she wasn’t alone. “For me, I’m cringing [at the announcement] because everyone turns to look at me, but it’s nice to know that my friends are doing well at things. And I always appreciate what they’re doing,” Patell said.
Recognizing sports and activities on the announcements is a fun tradition that helps up school spirit and brings the BSM community closer together. Overall, students feel that these features benefit our community by informing students about what’s going on around them. “It shows that they [sports teams] are fully committed and happy with what they do and that they work for what they do,” Jacobson said.
