Senior Sebastian Cerda, a member of the BSM cross-country team, competed in the MNHSL State Cross-Country Meet on Saturday, November 2. The meet took place at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course.
On October 24, the team competed in the section meet. Cerda had an impressive meet where he placed eighth, which qualified him for state. “Sebastian had a great race, he put himself out there in the first mile got into fourteenth or so place, then passed about six or seven guys in the last mile to get himself into place to qualify for state,” assistant coach and physics teacher Tanner Stevens said.
After training hard all season with many intense workouts, Cerda finally got to show off his efforts when the big day arrived and he gave it his all. Cerda’s race at state finished an amazing season for the BSM Cross Country team. “I competed in the 5K, which is 3.1 miles,” Cerda said.
Cerda had the chance to race at a new location. This presented a new challenge. The course was full of hills and Cerda was also battling an injury. Despite these challenges, Cerda did extremely well at state. “He had a great race and he ran a good time for himself. I think he was proud of the work that he did,” Stevens said.
The season was full of many memorable moments. Cerda’s favorite was the team’s overnight trip to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Overnight trips can be a great team bonding experience while also providing a chance to compete against athletes from another state. The BSM Cross Country team has a great dynamic shown through their support of each other. Many of Cerda’s teammates attended the state tournament to support him, just as Cerda had shown great sportsmanship at sections by cheering on his teammates. “I enjoyed NXR which is our overnight trip to Sioux Falls, South Dakota,” Cerda said.
Cerda has been on the team since his freshman year. Four years of commitment to the team. He ended his final season with an incredible performance at the state championship, surrounded by his teammates and coaches, all cheering him on.
